Research at DIME on the mechanics of vibration and noise is conducted using theoretical, numerical, and experimental approaches, often combined. In the theoretical field, mathematical tools of asymptotic analysis are used to study the dynamic response of linear and nonlinear systems. Numerically, within the context of the finite element method (FEM), methods are developed for the treatment of geometric uncertainties, for model dimensional reduction, for reduced-order modeling of fixed and moving interfaces, and for vibro-acoustic analyses through a combination of the boundary element method (BEM) and FEM. Experimental research includes the development of vibro-acoustic measurement and analysis techniques aimed at modal identification, monitoring and model identification, and noise source quantification. Some currently active research topics are listed below.
- Effect of geometric uncertainties on the dynamic response of mechanical components
- Development of dimension reduction techniques within the finite element method
- Dynamic identification of mechanical systems under transient operating conditions
- Asymptotic analysis of weakly detuned dynamic systems
- Vibration analysis of turbomachinery rotor disks monitored by non-contact sensors (blade tip timing method)
- Analysis of the unstable behavior of hydrodynamic bearings (oil whirl/whip) and their interaction with the rotor structure
- Study of vibro-acoustic energy from a source to a receiver through structural paths or airways
- Rotordynamic analysis of turbomachinery
