1. Project Title
Energy Efficiency and Electrification Technologies for Heat Flow Optimization in Process Industries (EEETHOS)
HORIZON EUROPE
Period: 01/11/2024 – 31/10/2028
2. Project Description
EEETHOS will fill this technology gap by developing key-enabling technologies for energy efficient, flexible and decarbonized process heating, and demonstrating them in five installations at industrial end-users at a TRL of 7. The technologies comprise among others, two high-temperature heat pump solutions for steam supply at up to 200 °C, a reversed Brayton heat pump with supply temperatures up to 300 °C, an innovative technology for heat pump-based drying and heating of minerals, a highly integrated steam compression-based solution for superheated steam drying and a heat capturing device for radiative waste heat recovery. These key-enabling technologies will be demonstrated in 5 demonstrators at industrial end-users representing EUs energy intensive process industries: asphalt, ceramics, pulp & paper, bricks and steel. These technologies are scalable for plant-wide implementation, allow a complete decarbonization at energy savings between 43 % to 86 %, based on local renewable energy sources.
3. Project Objectives
- Develop innovative solutions for electrification of industrial thermal users at MW scale
- Thermoeconomic analysis and optimization of high temperature heat pumps, optimized for the specific case study
- Simulation tools for scale-up and replication of the technologies
- Enhance the impact at global level, leading also international tasks on high temperature heat pump standardization

Budget: 15,0 M€
Financing institution: Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA)
Call: HORIZON-CL4-2024-TWIN-TRANSITION-01
6. Expected Impacts and Benefits
- Develop key-enabling technologies and digital tools for highly integrated, efficient and flexible industrial processes: Key components and systems: high-temperature heat pumps, advanced heat exchangers and highly integrated process equipment, will be developed and optimized to enable fossil-free efficient production in energy intensive industries. Advanced digital twins of the entire process and energy system will be developed to enable services for process flexibility, efficient operation, and predictive maintenance.
- Demonstrate 5 systems in an operational environment in energy intensive industries: 5 solutions will be demonstrated at a scale > 1MW in relevant industrial settings, achieving TRL 7 by project end. Industrial sites will be optimised for integration of novel designs, and modifications to the processes will be implemented to fully valorise thermal flows, maximize efficiency, and minimize waste.
- Valorise results and maximize the impact: Extensive business modelling, exploitation plans, new standards, and decarbonization strategies will be developed for both specific technologies and process industries to ensure scaling, commercialization and widespread deployment of EEETHOS’ solutions.
