1. Project Title
Renewable Hydrogen for Inland Waterway Emission Reduction (RH2IWER)
Horizon Europe
Period: 1/3/2023 – 31/8/2027
2. Project Description
The RH2IWER project aims to lay the foundations for the implementation of hydrogen fuel cell solutions for the propulsion of inland waterway vessels: in particular, the project aims to build and test six vessels on the Rhine River.
3. Project Objectives
- Create a solid foundation for accelerating the deployment of fuel cells and hydrogen
- Create a technological foundation for the shipping industry to reduce emissions to zero
- Demonstrate fuel cell-hydrogen solutions on six vessels (variable lengths, power up to 2 MW) of different types.
- Standardize containerized solutions based on fuel cells and onboard hydrogen storage technologies
4. Partner and Stakeholder Involved
Coordinator: VTT (Finland)
Academics: VTT, UNIGE
Industrialists: Ballard, Nedstack, Air Liquide, Compagnie Fluviale de Transport, Future Proof Shipping
5. Budget and Financing
Budget: € 20 531 971,50 (EU contribution € 14 998 541,38)
Financing institution: European Union, Climate, Energy and Mobility, HORIZON-JU-IA - HORIZON JU Innovation Actions
Call: https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/opportunities/topic-search;callCode=HORIZON-JTI-CLEANH2-2022-1
6. Expected Impacts and Benefits
- The vessel types analyzed are largely representative (80%) of those that navigate the Rhine and Danube rivers.
- The lessons learned from the case studies can be applied to other vessels, with the ultimate goal of zero greenhouse gas emissions.
- Application of similar solutions in other inland waterway navigation scenarios (e.g., lakes and/or rivers in Italy or other EU contexts).
- Economic feasibility analysis and replicability of the studied solutions.
