Combustion - Aeroacoustics – Computational Fluid Dynamics Genova

The Laboratory of Combustion – Aeroacoustics – Numerical Fluid-dynamics has two premises located at DIME Savona and Genoa sites. In particular, the Combustion Laboratory (SCL, Savona Combustion Laboratory) is placed at the Savona Campus of the University of Genoa, whilst the Aeroacoustics together with the Numerical Fluid-dynamics laboratories are located in the Villa Cambiaso site (Pavilions) of the Polytechnic School.

a)    Aeroacoustics Laboratory

The Aeroacoustics Laboratory activities are mainly addressed at the investigation of side channel blowers and low speed fans for cooling and heating systems, ventilation systems and environmental conditioning. Under the practical point of view, a double goal of the aeroacoustic investigations can be recognized:

•    the identification of active mechanisms responsible for noise generation and
•    individuation of geometries capable of potentially reducing the generated noise.

The laboratory is equipped with dedicated instrumentations:

•    Semi-anechoic chamber
•    Dedicated wind tunnel (designed according to rule ISO 5801) for aerodynamic investigations and fan performances measurements
•    Microphones and accelerometers arrays
•    Bruel&Kjaer spectra analyser
•    Bruel&Kjaer Sound Quality software
•    Hot wire, LDV and PIV anemometry systems
•    Test plenum (designed according to rule ISO 10302) for fans working at high pressure rise, equipped with variable speed servomotors

b)    Numerical Fluid-Dynamics Laboratory

Activities of Numerical Fluid-Dynamics Laboratory deal with the development and the application of numerical techniques to the processes of industrial interest, related to the mechanical engineering. In particular, the following skills and capabilities are available:

•    CAD geometries (also parametrized) generation
•    Computational meshes generation
•    Numerical solution of Navier-Stokes equations
•    Application of algorithms for the geometry optimization fed by CFD results
•    Multi-phase, multi-species and combustive computational schemes application
•    CFD analysis of fluid machinery, industrial components or systems
•    Design optimization for product development
•    Uncertainty Quantification applied to numerical simulation processes
•    Results post-processing by means of both standard and innovative (e.g. POD, Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) methods

The laboratory is equipped with exclusively dedicated computational resources, several calculation servers and workstation being available.
