Seminar on compliance and export controls in the academic and research sectors

The Italian National Authority (UAMA) – Dual-Use Materials Division, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy, is organizing a seminar on compliance and export controls in the academic and research sectors, to be held in Rome on May 12 and 13, 2026.

The event will be held in the Aldo Moro Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation - Piazzale della Farnesina 1, Rome, with the participation of representatives of leading Italian universities and research centers. Speakers will include officials from the U.S. Department of Energy, currently engaged in raising awareness and enhancing expertise in research safety in Italy, with a particular focus on dual-use and emerging technologies, as well as representatives from American universities and the European association EECARO. Professor Flavio Tonelli of DIME gave a speech entitled "When Technology Changes Meaning. Emerging and Disruptive Technologies, Dual Use, and the Limits of Compliance-as-Classification" during the "End User Review: University Perspective" session on the second day.
