Short Resume

Giovanni Berselli is Associate Professor (with Habilitation for Full Professorship) in Design Methods and Tools for Industrial Engineering (SSD ING-IND/15) at the University of Genova, where he teaches the courseof Design of Automatic Machinery, Computer Aided Design, and Technical Drawing for the 1st and 2nd level Degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, and Naval Architecture / Marine Engineering.

Within the DIME Department, Prof. Berselli is:

  • Delegate for International Relations.
  • Delegate of the Doctoral School Committee in Mechanical, Energy and Management Engineering (IMEG)  for the Mechanics, Materials and Measurements (MMM) curriculum.

Prof. Berselli received the Laurea degree (magna cum laude) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Modena, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Bologna in 2004 and 2009, respectively. He was previously Research Associate with the Escuela Superior de Ingenieros de la Universidad de Navarra, San Sebastian, Spain (2006), and with Monash University, Melbourne, Australia (2003-2004). He has been Visiting Professor at the Robotics and Automation Lab and Precision Engineering Groups, University of Twente, The Netherlands (2017, 4 months) and at the Medical Devices and Simulation Lab - Harvard Medical School (short visit, 2016).

He is (or has been) involved in several European projects (EU-grants), projects of relevant national interest (PRIN), and conventions with pubblic or private companies (e.g. Work Package Leader for the EU project AREUS - Automation and Robotics for EUropean Sustainable manufacturing, and Task Leader for the national project ADAPTIVE - National Technology Cluster “Intelligent Factory”). He has also been a finalist (selected for interview) for an ERC Starting Grant in 2016.

Prof. Berselli is currently the elected Secretary of the ASME Technical Committee (TC) on Modeling, Dynamics, and Control of Adaptive Systems - Aerospace Division, and member of the IEEE TC on Sustainable Production Automation, as well as the National Association of Machine Design (ADM).

 

Scientific Activity

Prof. Berselli has authored more than 130 publications in peer-reviewed international scientific journals, conferences and books. Editor of one international book, member of the editorial board of the Int. J. of Advanced Robotic Systems, recipient of an IEEE RAS Young Author Best Paper Award, invited speaker in more than 20 international research institution or universities. His scientific activity is focused on the development of engineering methods and tools for the conceptual and functional design, the modeling and optimization, and the experimental evaluation of integrated mechanical/mechatronic systems. Specific examples are:

  • CAD/CAE-based design and multi-disciplinary optimization methods.
  • Integrated Design of Compliant Components for safe and effective human-machine interaction.
  • Virtual Prototyping of Mechanical Systems and Eco-Design of Automated Industrial Plants.
